Mayoress of Colombo Rosy Senanayake yesterday requested the closure of all business establishments in Colombo City as a precaution to contain the COVID-19 pandemic.
“I request all business establishments in Colombo City to be closed for a few days to contain the pandemic. The support given to me by closing business establishments is a support given to contain the pandemic in the city,” Ms. Senanayake said in a statement.
She noted that more than 90 percent cases reported from Colombo City accounts for the Delta variant. “The Mayoress welcomed the move by the trade associations to close all shops in the city yesterday.” The decision taken by the trade associations to close shops is commendable. They have thought of contributing towards containing the pandemic without thinking of their profits. This is welcome move,” she said.
Also, Ms. Senanayake stressed that warnings given by the WHO that 30,000 people who would die of COVID-19 by January 2022 should be taken seriously.
