The Central Environment Authority (CEA) teamed up with the Consumer Affairs Authority (CAA) carried out a joint raid yesterday in Ganemulla and seized over 2, 050 kilogrammes of illegal polythene, which is hazardous for human usage.
The CEA acting on information organised a joint operation with its branch office in Gampaha along with a team of CAA officials raided a factory in Bollatha in Ganemulla and found a stock of prohibited polythene lunch sheets being hidden in a lorry.
The preliminary inquiries proved that the seized stock of lunch sheets was not up to the authorized standards of polythene as mentioned under the National Environmental (Protection and Quality) Act No. 1 of 1990.
The authorities are to file legal action against the owner of the polythene factory as per the provisions of the National Environmental Act.
