CEB engineers fall sick today

  • Protest over ‘unlawful’ action by its Chairman

The Ceylon Electricity Board (CEB) Engineers’ Union will  launch a sick note campaign today as a mark of protest over what it  called ‘unlawful’ action by Chairman M.M.C. Ferdinando, an official  said.

Union’s Joint Secretary Dammika Wimalaratne told Daily  Mirror that the CEB chairman had carried out a number of unlawful  activities including the appointment of the new general manager in  violation of the legal provision.
“We have instructed all our engineers to report sick  leave, and gather in front of the CEB head office to protest. This is our  silent protest. If there is no favourable response, we will go for  stronger trade union action,” he said.
Asked whether today’s action could lead to any power  interruption, he said the engineers assigned for shift duties at the  power stations would be available, and therefore power interruption was  unlikely over the trade union action.
