The Criminal Investigations Department (CID) arrested five Chinese nationals and one Sri Lankan during a raid on an online loan centre in Dehiwala.
The operation, carried out by the Cyber Crimes Investigation Division of the CID, resulted in the confiscation of eight desktop computers, thirteen laptops, and 41 mobile phones from the company.
The arrests were made in response to a complaint with the Cyber Crimes Investigation Division.
The suspects were released on bail of Rs. 6 million each after being presented to the court.
It was revealed that while providing loans online, the personal information of the borrower’s mobile phone has been obtained through an OTP number and the relevant money has been obtained by threatening to spread certain information to others in the society.
The Police urged not to engage in such transactions with untrustworthy organizations.
Meanwhile, the Police also urged the public to report any related complaints to the nearest police station or the Cyber Crimes Investigation Division of the CID.
The Director of the Cyber Crimes Investigation Division, SSP Darshika Kumari disclosed information about various institutions, Star Vip Loan, Camel Ship Loan, and Roser Loan, providing loans online, and deceiving individuals.
According to her, these entities offer loans ranging from Rs 5,000 to Rs 200,000. Furthermore, she emphasized that these fraudulent lenders resort to threatening tactics, stating that they will disclose the borrower’s personal information to the public if the repayment is not made.
