Capybaras arrive at Dehiwela Zoo

By H.M.Dharmapala

A pair of Capybaras have been flown to Sri Lanka under the animal exchange scheme between Czech Republic and Sri Lanka and handed over to the Dehiwala Zoological Gardens.

A senior official of the zoo said that Capybaras belong to a rare species of animal living in South Asian countries but not endemic to Sri Lanka and that a well grown animal was about four feet tall. He said Capybaras are herbivorous animals with a life span of about six years.

The official said the quarantine period of the two animals introduced to the zoo was over and that they were ready for public exposition.
