Cardinal says IMF arrangement detrimental to country

  • Says people should not vote for politicians insensitive to their issues

By Yohan Perera

Archbishop of Colombo Cardinal Malcolm Ranjith questioned seeking IMF Assistance and implied that there would be a negative impact on working with the organisation.

“Where would Sri Lanka end up if we bow down to International Monetary Fund (IMF)?” he questioned during a gathering in Negombo.

He also asked people not to vote for politicians insensitive to their issues.

“Do not vote for those who are not sensitive towards the issues faced by the people,” he said.   “The Urban Development Authority (UDA) has constructed apartment buildings and sold them to foreigners. There was a news item to this effect recently.   Is the objective of UDA is to construct houses for foreigners? Do not vote for those who are not sensitive towards the issues faced by the people. Do not come and ask for houses from me if you vote for these people,” he said.

He said there are many families without a house of their own at the moment.
