The 14 suspects who had been on remand on the charge of damaging Buddha statues in several temples in the Mawanella area were further remanded till December 16.
The order was made by the three- member bench comprising High Court Judges- Mr. Jagath A Kahandagamage, Mrs. Jayani De Silva and Mrs. S.I Kalingawansa of the Kegalle High Court.
When the case came up for hearing on Tuesday afternoon (16), the Terrorist Investigation Division produced another two suspects who had been in custody in connection with the incident.
The Court that upheld the submissions of the defence, released the two suspects from the custody of the TID and remanded them.
The Judges who considered the request of the defence to allow the relatives to meet the suspects of the case, allowed only a close relative to do so.
The accused were served with the indictment with Tamil translations. Court requested the Bar Association to assign Counsels for the accused who were not in a position to retain Lawyers.
State Counsels- Wasantha Perera, Sajith Bandara, and Arenda Jayasinhe appeared for the prosecution while President’s Counsel together with a panel of Lawyers including President’s Counsel M.A.M.Subahir appeared for the accused.
