A special centre of climate change studies which will be affiliated to the University of Rajarata and which will work parallelly with the proposed climate change studies has been recommended by a group of university dons.

The proposal was handed over to the Presidential Advisor Ruwan Wijewardene yesterday.

The group of dons led by Professor R.P.I.R Prasanna said the study centre can work with climate change studies. “This centre will have units for managing the effects of climate change and to carry out research on climate change. The centre will hold annual seminars through which the people will be informed on climate change. The centre will work closely with institutions which compile environmental laws.

The Centre will comprise a Director to whom some of the powers held by the Vice Chancellor of the university will be transferred  while it will be directly administered by the University Council.

The desired result of this institution would be to prepare people for future challenges, empowering the national economy to improve foreign currency revenue and effective national policies in the given field , playing a role in compiling laws. The Centre will focus on the dry zone as its pilot working area.
