China has played vital role in Sri Lanka’s social and economic development for decades: AKD

The People’s Republic of China has played a vital role in the social and economic development of Sri Lanka for decades,President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, who is on an official visit to China, said yesterday.   

The President said these tours will strengthen bilateral collaborations for the benefit of both countries and their people.  

He made these remarks during the bilateral talks with Chinese President Xi Jinping yesterday.   

The President said Sri Lanka is very happy about the massive advancement achieved by China in economic, industrial, technical, infrastructure and human development. 


President Dissanayake said his government stands for ‘One China” policy in all sectors such as muli-lateral and bi-lateral forums.  

Meanwhile,Chinese President Xi Jinping emphasised China’s readiness to work closely with Sri Lanka in ushering in a new era of development.  The Chinese President also recalled the longstanding relationship between the two countries, highlighting the close friendship that has existed for decades.  

President Xi reiterated China’s commitment to continuing its cooperation with Sri Lanka in the future.  The two countries also signed several key MoUs aimed at strengthening collaboration in areas such as economy, social development, and industry.  

President Disanayake held an official meeting with Chinese President Xi Jinping last afternoon at the Great Hall of the People.  

The welcoming ceremony of President Dissanayake was conducted with great honour, including a ceremonial gun salute.  Minister of Foreign Affairs, Foreign Employment, and Tourism Vijitha Herath, Minister of Transport, Highways, Ports, and Civil Aviation Bimal Rathnayake, and Director General of the Government Information Department H.S.K.J. Bandara were also part of the delegation accompanying President Disanayake.
