China ready to expand ties with Sri Lanka under new Govt. after presidential polls



  • Says came forward to develop Hambantota Port after India, US declined to do it

Chinese Ambassador Qi Zhenhong said China came forward to  develop the Hambantota Port since countries such as India and the  United States declined to accept Sri Lanka’s offer in this regard.   


He made these remarks in response to a question during an  interactive session with a team of journalists in the exhibition hall of  Colombo Port City on Thursday.   


He also hailed Sri Lanka’s adherence to the One China  policy, he said it reflects the spirit of genuine friendship. He also  reiterated China’s firm stance on protecting its sovereignty, adding,  “Certain attempts are being made to undermine China’s sovereignty, but  we would never tolerate such motive  


Deputy Chief of Mission of the Chinese Embassy Yanwei Zhu  said China is ready to expand its cooperation with Sri Lanka with the  new government to be formed after the presidential poll on September 21.  He asserted that China would respect the choice of the Sri Lankan people.   


“We are ready to enhance our cooperation with Sri Lanka under the new government. We are ready if the new government is ready,”  he said.
