China will continue to support Chinese financial institutions in actively engaging with Sri Lanka to alleviate its debt burden and promote sustainable development, Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesperson Wang Wenbin said during a regular media conference.

When questioned on whether China is willing to share details of its preliminary debt agreement with Sri Lanka, reached with the Export-Import Bank of China, with the International Monetary Fund (IMF) or other official creditors of the nation, he responded by confirming that, as an official creditor, the Export-Import Bank of China has tentatively agreed on a debt treatment with Sri Lanka.

He also said that the Sri Lankan side has already made relevant information available.

“China will continue to support Chinese financial institutions in actively consulting with Sri Lanka and maintaining friendly communication with other creditors and jointly play a positive role in helping Sri Lanka navigate the situation, ease its debt burden and achieve sustainable development,” he said.
