Club Wasantha case: Suspects detained for 72 hours

The three suspects, including a gunman taken into custody on Friday (23) in connection with the murder of businessman Surendra Wasantha Perera alias Club Wasantha and three others were to be produced in court today after being questioned under detention order for 72 hours.   

A senior official of the Terrorist Investigation Division (TID) said the suspects were in possession of a stock of live cartridges marked as KPI, two cyanide capsules, a T56 rifle, and three cellular phones.   

The three suspects had been arrested in Dehiwala during a joint raid carried out by a team of officers of the TID and the Criminal Investigation Department (CID).

Police said one of the gunmen identified as Ajith Rohana alias ‘Chandi’ was among the three suspects in custody. The 31 year old suspect was a former soldier of the Sinha Regiment of the Army who had allegedly been involved in a previous murder.   

Other two suspects had provided transport and accommodation to the gunmen.   

 Another eleven suspects arrested in connection with the murder on July 8 at Athurugiriya are in remand.   

 The three suspects had been arrested by the TID on the instructions of Director of the CID, DIG Rohan Premarathne.
