Collect due fines before August 30

Ways and Means Committee tells Excise Department

The Ways and Means Committee Chairman Patali Champika Ranwaka has informed the Excise Department to take steps to collect Rs 7 billion which is due from liquor suppliers before August 30 this year.

The committee made this request during a visit to the Department with other members of the committee recently.
The committee also instructed the Department to repair the apparatus which had been imported to detect counterfeit stickers pasted on liquor bottles before August 30.

A representative from the company which produces stickers was summoned before the committee in Parliament yesterday.
The committee had identified four companies who refrain from pasting stickers on liquor bottles.

It was revealed that the Excise Department had not used the ten machines given to identify forged stickers and it was found out that they were out of order. Accordingly the department was requested to repair them and put them to use before August 30 this year.
