A Contempt of Court application has been filed in the Court of Appeal seeking an order to take action against former Sports Minister Roshan Ranasinghe for committing the offence of contempt of court.

The petitioner Dimitri Shiraz Augustus Pietrangeli, an Attorney-at-Law by profession filed the application through Attorney-at-Law Subhashini j. Pathiranage, challenging the alleged contemptuous conduct of the former Sports Minister during a parliamentary session on November 8, 2023.  The petitioner is further seeking an order to impose sentence on the former Minister for contempt of court under Article 105(3) of the constitution.    The petitioner stated that the respondent former Minister during a parliamentary session on November 8 made several allegations regarding the alleged motives and reasons for the issuance of interim orders by Justice Nissanka Bandula Karunaratne.
The petitioner alleged that the respondent in the course of his speech in Parliament clearly alleged that the President of Court of Appeal had made interim orders setting aside the gazette issued by the Minister solely on the basis that the Court of Appeal President’s relative son was the advisor to the SLC.
