Country has lost support of nearly half of UNHRC member states: Gammanpila

  • Resolution on Sri Lanka was adopted on Thursday by a majority of 13 votes

Sri Lanka has lost the support of nearly half of the UNHRC member states, MP Udaya Gammanpila said yesterday.
“The resolution on Sri Lanka was adopted on Thursday by a majority of 13 votes.

This is the worst defeat Sri Lanka has suffered at UNHRC in the recent past. The last worst defeat was losing the vote by 12 in 2013. At a time Sri Lanka has suffered an economic setback, it should have got the support of more nations.  However, only seven nations supported Sri Lanka this year. Some 12 nations supported Sri Lanka last year. Accordingly, Sri Lanka’s support has declined by 50 per cent at UNHRC,” the MP told a press conference.

He said the government should take steps to safeguard the Sri Lankan security forces by providing effective responses to allegations made against them. It seems that journalist Chaminda Ferdinando is doing his best to safeguard forces.

Mr. Gammanpila who referred to the postponement of GCE advanced level examination said he will file legal action if the government fails to come up with a favourable solution to the issue by October 12. “Students who are affected call us and send SMSs to us asking us to take legal action against the postponement. We will take legal action if there is no solution to the issue by October 12,” he said.

The MP who also referred to the decision by the government to postpone the enacting of 22nd amendment to the constitution, said the postponement was a result of a person trying to stop the provision of prohibiting people with dual citizenship to be elected to Parliament.
