Death of Sri Ranga’s Security Officer Former OIC Chettikulam Police gets jail term



For making a false report and concealing evidence

Former OIC Chettikulam Police CI Sugath Roshan Sanjeewa who pleaded guilty of making a false report on the death of a police sergeant who died in an accident and concealing the evidence of the case was sentenced to six-month imprisonment suspended for seven years and ordered to pay Rs.500,000 as compensation to the wife of the deceased police sergeant.

 Former Parliamentarian J.Sri Ranga, the first accused, who had been on remand on the charge of homicide by causing a traffic accident, was further remanded till November 06.   
Police had reported to court that Sergeant 36759 P. Udaya Jayamini Pushpakumara, a security officer of the former Parliamentarian had died when the jeep driven by him met with an accident on March 30, 2011 when transporting the MP.   
However, on a complaint received from the deceased’s wife, Police Special Investigations Unit conducted investigations to find that the jeep without a registration number had been driven by Parliamentarian J.Sri Ranga. On the findings of the investigations, the Attorney General filed indictments against him under eleven counts and in addition action had been filed against him on March 28, for influencing the witnesses.   


The former OIC -Chettikulam Police had been charged for making a false report on the incident and concealing the evidence.   


Former SP Vavuniya Division Amarasiri Senaratne (retired as DIG), Vavuniya former ASP Harischandra Bandara (Retired as SSP), former Sergeant of Chettikulam Police Priyadarshana Herath, PC W. P. Pathmapala are others accused in the case.   


The case was postponed to November 06.
