Claiming that about 7,000 pregnant mothers have been infected by the Covid-19 virus so far in Sri Lanka, Family Health Bureau Director Dr. Chithramali de Silva said yesterday there was a decrease in Covid-19 cases among pregnant mothers during the past couple of weeks.

She told a news conference at the Informations Department that 55 deaths of Covid infected pregnant mothers have been reported in Sri Lanka so far.

She said 6,000 out of the total of 7,000 cases have been reported after the onset of the third wave in May this year. Dr. Silva said more than 90% of pregnant mothers have got the Covid-19 vaccines and requested all pregnant mothers to do so, as it would prevent them from developing complications and death.
She said none of the pregnant mothers who had received both doses of the Covid vaccine had died in Sri Lanka.
