It has been revealed that the complaints received by the Police Commission were incomplete and that it resulted in long delays in investigations. Chairman of the National Police Commission Chandra Fernando said the complaints should be complete with all facts to enable the commission to go head with investigations expeditiously.
During his inspection of the Southern Province Regional Office of the National Police Commission he said 134 complaints had been received from Galle, Matara and Hambantota District for the last six months on excess of power, neglect of investigating complaints, and prejudice.
“Several of them were based on personal grudges and many others were in pseudo names. Most of the Hand written petitions were not legible. The complaints containing lopsided facts require questioning the writer to have a genuine perspective of the incident. Quite often only 50 percent of the petitioners reply the questionnaire referred to them.
Police officers found guilty would be liable to disciplinary action through the Public Service Commission, or the IGP. Complaints on incidents of bribery would be referred to the Commission to Investigate Allegations of Bribery or Corruption for further investigations” The NPC Chairman said.
He further said the objective of the National Police Commission was to make the police service independent and people friendly.
