Detention of civil activists: Buddhist monk files Habeas Corpus petition



The petitioner stated that the corpus and several others who were released on bail by Colombo Magistrate were then forcibly taken to a quarantine centre in Mullaitivu without any presence of  health authorities or antigen tests or PCR tests.

 

A Buddhist monk yesterday (14) filed a Habeas Corpus petition in the Court of Appeal seeking an interim order directing authorities to produce Media Secretary of National Bhikkhu Front Ven.Koswatte Mahanama Thera before Court forthwith.  


The petitioner Ven.Tangalle Sharadha Thera filed the petition naming IGP Chandana Wickremaratne, Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police Deshabandu Tennakoon, Officer-In-Charge of Thalangama Police Station, Director General of Health Services Dr.Asela Gunawardena and several others as respondents.   


The petitioner said the protestors had gathered at Battaramulla junction on the 8th of July displaying placards against the proposed Kotalawela Defence Academy Bill. The petitioner stated that the protestors had been lined up with one-metre distance wearing face masks without interruption to the public.
