Discussions about holding the next General Election have begun, with the Election Commission getting ready to organise the polls once the Parliament is dissolved.

Speaking to Daily Mirror, Election Commission Chairman R.M.A.L. Ratnayake said the President had not officially contacted the Election Commission to begin talks regarding the election. “However, preparations are already in motion for when this happens,” he said.

“Once the Parliament is dissolved, nominations for candidates will need to be called within 7 to 17 days. After that, the election must be held within five to seven weeks,” the Chairman added.

When asked about the funds needed to hold the election, the Election Chief said the necessary money would be allocated by the President after Parliament
is dissolved.
