A complaint had been filed against a drunken traffic  policeman in uniform who had knocked down a man on the pedestrian crossing  on the Colombo-Negombo main road and had fled away.

Despite being under heavy influence of liquor, the traffic  cop had allegedly attempted to defend his actions with a protesting crowd  and a priest attached to Mattumagala Church. The priest who refuted the policeman’s explanation had explained the gravity of the offence he had  committed.

The injured man, who suffered fractures in his hand and  leg, was promptly taken to the Colombo North Teaching Hospital-Ragama  for urgent medical attention. Following the incident, the traffic  policeman had fled the scene in a three-wheeler, leaving his motorbike at the spot, even without looking into the injuries of the person he had  knocked down.
The Catholic priest had lodged a complaint with the Mahabage Police Station in connection with the incident.
