EC Chairman requests President to strengthen its members’ security

In the wake of death threats on several members of the Election Commission, the Chairman of the Election Commission Nimal Punchihewa has sent a letter to President Ranil Wickremesinghe.

A spokesman at the Election Commission said the Chairman had sent a letter to the President requesting to strengthen the security of the commission members following recent death threats on several members.


Three members of the Election Commission recently received death threats to resign from their posts.


The Chairman also requested the President to take necessary steps to conduct a free and fair election.


In his letter, the Chairman also reportedly informed the President that support of some institutions for the Local Government Election is slow and sought his intervention.
