In preparation for the upcoming elections, the Election Commission has launched routine operations aimed at ensuring a smooth electoral process.

Speaking to Daily Mirror, Election Commission chairman R.M.A.L. Rathnayake said that necessary directives had been issued to district offices across the nation to commence preparations related to ballot boxes and other essential electoral materials.

Addressing concerns about the condition of ballot boxes used in previous elections, the Election Commission has identified numerous damaged boxes.

“These boxes will be promptly sent to the government factory for necessary repairs to ensure they meet required standards for the upcoming polls. Rathnayake assured that any defects found in the ballot boxes will be swiftly corrected once polling station details are confirmed,” he underscored.

Looking ahead, the Election Commission plans to conduct a comprehensive census of officers who will be involved in various capacities during the election period.

In addition to these operational preparations, Rathnayake disclosed plans for a meeting with local election monitoring organisations scheduled for next week.

The Commission earlier announced that the election would be held during the period between September 17 and October 16.
