  • They have been granted permission to engage in monitoring activities starting from the pre-election period

European Union and Commonwealth election observers have been authorised to monitor the upcoming presidential election, the Election Commission said yesterday.

Chairman of the National Election Commission R.M.A.L. Ratnayake told media that the relevant groups have been granted permission to engage in monitoring activities starting from the pre-election period.

A team of Commonwealth observers were in Sri Lanka to monitor the presidential election in 2019 as well. Some 16 members from the Commonwealth nations participated in election monitoring in 2019.

Meanwhile, local monitoring groups, including People’s Action for Free and Fair Elections or PAFFREL are also preparing for the presidential election monitoring process.
