“Increasing prices of food has affected food security which resulted in malnutrition. The worst affected are children and expectant mothers. The prices of food providing animal protein are not within the reach of the majority of the people. The responsibility of the Department of Animal Production and Health has failed to meet the demand for animal protein. The relevant authorities only hold conferences to discuss on the issues affecting food security” He said.
He further said the increasing electricity charges, fuel price hike and the cost of labour had affected food security and that it would further aggravated in the times to come.
Director General of the Department of Animal Production and Health Dr. Hemali Kotalawala, Prof.Inddunil Pathirana of the Department of Veterinary Science in Ruhunu University, General Secretary of the Veterinary Surgeons’ Association Nuwan Hewagamage, and Treasurer Sumith Prasanna Kumara were present at the occasion.
