The first poll after National People’s Power (NPP) swept into power will be held today when the people of Elpitiya will go to polling stations to elect members for the Pradeshiya Sabha in their area. Some 28 members will be elected to the Pradeshiya Sabha according to the Election Commission. A total number of 55, 663 voters will cast their votes in 48 polling stations.
At least eight registered political parties and one independent group have entered the fray. The parties that are contesting the election include Sri Lanka Podujana Peramuna (SLPP), National People’s Power (NPP), Janasetha Peramuna, Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB), Podujana Eksath Peramuna, United People’s Freedom Alliance (UPFA), Jathika Janatha Pakshaya, Devana Parapura.
Some 17 candidates will be nominated from the first paper, while 14 will be elected from the supplementary paper. The representation of women candidates is 02 for the first nomination paper and 07 for the supplementary nomination paper. Commissioner General of Elections Saman Sri Ratnayake said the result could be announced by 10 pm today.
At least 500 policemen will be deployed to ensure security of the area during and after the polls.
