Elon Musk highlights Sri Lankan partner of German Far-Right Leader

In a controversial op-ed published by the Welt am Sonntag newspaper in Germany, tech billionaire Elon Musk has reiterated his support for Germany’s far-right Alternative for Germany (AfD) and highlighted the Sri Lankan Partner of German Far-Right Leader Alice Weidel.

Describing the party as the “last spark of hope” for the nation. His remarks have ignited a fierce backlash among German politicians, particularly with a snap federal election looming just seven weeks away.

“The portrayal of the AfD as right-wing extremist is clearly false, considering that Alice Weidel, the party’s leader, has a same-sex partner from Sri Lanka! Does that sound like Hitler to you? Please!” Musk said in the piece.  Germany’s domestic intelligence agency has classified the AfD at the national level as a suspected extremism case since 2021.

The reaction to Musk’s statements was swift, leading Eva Marie Kogel, the editor of the opinion section, to announce her resignation shortly after the piece went live.
