Failure of Govt mechanism allowed COVID variants except for Brazilian variant enter SL: JVP

All the COVID-19 variants except for the Brazilian variant had entered Sri Lanka due to the failure in the government’s COVID prevention mechanism and arbitrary actions of the government not heeding to the advice of the doctors and specialists regarding the COVID prevention, the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP) charged yesterday.

JVP National Organiser Tilvin Silva told a news conference that the number of patients has been drastically increasing, exceeding the hospital capacity.

He said the government was making plans to increase bed capacity rather than finding ways to reduce the number of patients.

“The Army Commander once said, no one will be allowed to be dead on the road and everyone would be provided with a bed. The issue is not with normal beds, but special beds required for ICUs. Normal beds will be of no use,” he said.

Mr. Silva said State Minister Sudarshini Fernandopulle appealed to affluent people to make donations as the situation was serious and added that people were left in the lurch as to what happened to the COVID Fund.
