A horrifying tragedy unfolded as a 63-year-old father, Mohamed Mizra Mohamed Kaleel, took the lives of his 29-year-old son, Kaleel Riyaz, and his 14-year-old daughter Fathima Fasliya in Periyanilavanai , Ampara. Both children were disabled, compounding the sorrow of their untimely deaths.
The scene was discovered by authorities, who also found Mohamed Kaleel in critical condition after attempting to end his own life with the same weapon he used on his children. Rushed to Kalmunai hospital, he fought for his life while his son and daughter were pronounced dead at the scene.
Investigations revealed a troubling history. The family had withdrawn both children from a special needs school, run by the Human Link Institute, years prior. Their mother had passed away just eight months ago, leaving them in the care of their father. With two other sons employed abroad, the family lived in relative isolation, estranged from their relatives for an extended period.
As authorities delve deeper into the circumstances surrounding this tragic event, it becomes evident that support for families dealing with disabilities and mental health challenges is paramount. This heart-wrenching incident underscores the need for increased awareness and resources to address such issues within communities.
The Kalmunai Magistrate, S.M. Samsudeen, conducted a preliminary inquiry at the scene, while the Periyanilavanai Police, under the direction of SP Ampara Division Nandana Jayapathma, continue their investigations.
