Social activist and ‘GotaGoGama’ protest leader Dhaniz Ali was arrested by the CID inside a Dubai-bound flight at the Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) last evening.

Dhaniz Ali who was among two activists representing the GGG Aragalaya that entered the Sri Lanka Rupavahini Corporation (SLRC) on July 13 and aired a special message, was taken into custody by the Criminal Investigation Department sleuths at the BIA when the latter was about to leave for Dubai.

A tense situation prevailed inside the flight when the CID sleuths tried to take Dhaniz by force and drag him outside and a group of other passengers obstructed it, demanding the authorities produce either an arrest warrant or a court’s travel ban on the suspect, which the officials had failed to submit.

Several live footage was circulating on social media platforms about how the activist was being taken by force by the CID sleuths.  When contacted, the police said that the suspect was arrested over five charges.

The Daily Mirror on July 13 reported how Dhaniz Ali implored the large crowds that entered the Prime Minister Secretariat on Flower Road not to steal or cause harm to the public property of the premises, saying they belong to the people of this country and not the corrupt rulers.
