General Election: Over 900 in the hot seat for failing to submit expense reports

  • Names to be handed over to police

Over 900 candidates who contested the General Election have failed to submit their income and expenditure reports to the Election Commission, with the deadline ending on December 6.

According to the Commission, only 949 of the 8,361 candidates have not submitted their expense reports.

Of the 527 members on the National List, only 434 have submitted expense reports.
Commenting on the situation, Commission’s Chairman R. M. A. L. Rathnayake told Daily Mirror that the failure to meet the deadline constitutes a breach of the Regulation of Election Expenditure Act, with violators facing legal consequences.
“Accordingly, the names of the candidates who failed to submit the reports will be handed over to the police for further action under the Penal Code,” the Chief said.
