Government is willing to amend laws pertaining to abortion and to legalize it subjected to conditions, Parliament was informed yesterday.
Minister of Justice Ali Sabry who was responding to a question raised by MP Shantha Bandara in the House said it is essential to hold a national level discussion on allowing abortion in certain circumstances.
“We suggest that the Women MPs Caucus in Parliament should initiate a discussion on it and come up with some suggestions. It is necessary that abortion should be allowed if it becomes essential to save a woman’s life and when a woman become pregnant as a result of rape,” the Minister said.
MP Shantha Bandara requested that the government take action to allow abortion subjected to conditions.
