Govt allies back move to introduce organic farming

Eleven political parties and organisations, politically aligned with the government pledged to support the move to introduce organic farming at a meeting held yesterday with Agriculture Minister Mahindananda Aluthgamage.   

 The Minister said he, along with the officials briefed the party representatives on steps being taken to manufacture organic fertilizer and the short, medium and long term plans for the promotion of such farming in the country.    These representatives briefed the Minister on the shortcomings that could be encountered in implementing such a decision immediately.  


 Minister Vasudeva Nanayakkara who attended the meeting on behalf of the Democratic Left Front said the chemical fertilizer companies and their lackeys were arraigned against the move to introduce organic farming .  

 MPs Gevindu Cumaratunga, Ven.Athuraliye Rathana Thero, Weerasumana Weerasinghe and Asanka Navaratne were among others who attended the meeting .
