The government has discussed on imposing a maximum retail price (MRP) on chicken to control the price or if found necessary, to import chicken, minister Mahinda Amaraweera said.

Though the government gives priority to protect the local poultry industry, the price of chicken has risen rapidly in the country and the shortage of eggs has not been solved yet, he said.

A discussion took place at the ministry in this regard, with all the industrialists involved in the poultry production industry.

To control the increase in the price of chicken as well as to reduce the current shortage of eggs, a proposal with the agreement of the local poultry industry will be submitted to the Cabinet next week.

It is the government’s responsibility to protect the consumer as well as the nutritional requirements of the people of the country, the minister said.

However, a report with information related to the decisions reached in this discussion will be submitted to the Cabinet meeting next week, the minister added.
