Govt. invites UN High Commissioner to visit Sri Lanka

A Sri Lankan delegation led by Foreign Minister Prof. G. L. Peiris called on UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Michelle Bachelet and invited her to visit Sri Lanka, Daily Mirror learns.


The delegation met with her in her office in Geneva on March 2. Prof. Peiris made an elaborate presentation on the steps taken by the government.

Referring to her report on Sri Lanka’s human rights situation, the delegation said some of the findings in it did not correspond with ground realities in Sri Lanka.


The High Commissioner was requested to visit Sri Lanka to see for herself the achievements on the ground.
The meeting took place in a cordial atmosphere and lasted for 50 minutes, though only 20 minutes had been reserved for it.


The High Commissioner also requested the Sri Lankan side to remain engaged with her office and cooperate with it.


The Sri Lankan delegation comprised State Minister Prof. Channa Jayasumana, Justice Minister Ali Sabry and Foreign Secretary Prof. Jayanath Colombage.
