Government is planning to postpone even national elections scheduled to be held next year, Leader of Opposition Sajith Premadasa alleged yesterday.

“The government is doing this in the guise of amending electoral laws. This tactic which the government is adopting is like an icing cake which has been poisoned.

People of this nation will not get deceived by this piece of icing cake,” Mr. Premadasa said in a statement.
“The final result of the government which postpones elections neglecting people’s sovereignty would end up in a disaster. Sri Lanka had experienced postponement of elections. This government is trying to take Sri Lanka back to those dark periods in the past,” he added.   “One cannot expect an election from a President who ridicules the demand for elections by saying “there is no election to be postponed,” he also said.

He said postponing elections is a blow for democracy. “We will do our utmost against any move to postpone any kind of election,” he said in this regard.
