For all low-income dwellers in Colombo City

All low-income dwellings in Colombo City will be converted into low-income apartment complexes by 2024, Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa told Parliament yesterday.

Speaking during the committee stage debate on the budget, the Prime Minister said the government has planned to construct 50,000 new low-income housing units by 2024. 

“We have already constructed 1,108 houses for the middle class while another 13 middle-income housing projects will get off the ground soon,” he said.

“The government will also construct 100 low-income apartments complexes in each electorate under the Siyapatha Mahal Nivasa project,” he added.

“The programme to construct houses for the estate community will also continue with a project funded by the Indian government to construct 10,000 houses in 2022. The Mihindu Nivahana project under which houses for the parents of Buddhist clergy will also continue where 2,000 houses will be built,” he also said.

The Prime Minister said the government had also focused on coast conservation and on the flood control programme in the Western Province.
