Govt to increase number of electric vehicles: Dr. Jasinghe

The Government of Sri Lanka has taken a policy decision to increase the number of electric vehicles (EVs) when importing vehicles, Environment Ministry Secretary Dr. Anil Jasinghe said.

He said the decision was taken in line with the plans to implement large-scale renewable energy projects to meet 70% of the targets by 2030.

The use of electric vehicles has become an international trend. The price of electric vehicles is high in the world market, but is gradually decreasing.

The transformative change from fossil-fuel vehicles to electric vehicles is currently happening in various countries, such as the Netherlands.  With the current economic downfall Sri Lanka has to reach that target gradually. However, Sri Lanka is planning to fully accept the transformative change by 2030, said Dr. Jasinghe.

A programme was held in front of the Transport Ministry at Battaramulla to commemorate the International Day of Clean Air for Blue Skies with the patronage of the State Minister of Transport Lasantha Alagiyawanna, Environment Ministry Secretary Dr. Anil Jasinghe and several other officials.
