The government will take action to recover the defaulted tax money by Director of W.M. Mendis and Company Ltd. Arjun Aloysius, who was sentenced to a six-month jail term for defaulting a VAT payment amounting to Rs. 3.5 billion, Cabinet Spokesman Vijitha Herath said yesterday.

He told the weekly briefing to announce Cabinet decisions, that Aloysius was imprisoned for non-payment of taxes and that the government would not receive that tax money by imprisoning him.

The Minister said that apart from the legal action taken against him for defaulting taxes, intervention must be made to recover the defaulted tax money as well.

“It is an amount payable to the government. Hence, the government hopes to take action to recover it,” he said.
The Minister said action will be taken to recover tax money defaulted by several other individuals as well.
