Habeas Corpus petition filed on behalf of Duminda Nagamuwa withdrawn



The Habeas Corpus petition filed on behalf of Frontline Socialist Party Propaganda Secretary Duminda Nagamuwa was yesterday withdrawn before the Court of Appeal. 

 

The petitioner Naidelage Dulani Priyangika, the wife of Duminda Nagamuwa had filed this petition seeking an interim order directing authorities to produce Duminda Nagamuwa before Court forthwith. 


President’s Counsel Saliya Pieris appearing for the petitioner informed the court that the corpus Duminda Nagamuwa had been released from the quarantine centre in Pallekele last Friday (16). He moved Court to withdraw the petition, informing his client does not intend to proceed with the application. 


Taking into consideration the facts, Justice Sobhitha Rajakaruna permitted the petitioner to withdraw the petition. 
The petitioner had named IGP Chandana Wickremaratne, Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police Deshabandu Thennakoon, Officer-In-Charge of Slave Island Police Station, Director General of Health Services Dr Asela Gunawardena and several others as respondents. 


Duminda Nagamuwa and seven others were arrested by the police on July 7 when they staged a peaceful protest at the State Engineering Corporation against the interdictions of two employees on political grounds. 


The petitioner said Duminda Nagamuwa and others were walking away from the court premises after being granted bail by Fort Magistrate’s Court, a group of police officers blocked their movements and informed them that they would be compulsorily referred to a quarantine centre.
