Health officials warn of spike in Dengue cases with torrential rains

With the showery condition intensifying, health officials have warned of a surge in Dengue cases.  


The Epidemiology unit said local authorities and health organizations continue to work tirelessly to combat the spread of Dengue.  


“Public awareness campaigns, mosquito control measures, and prompt medical assistance for those affected remain key strategies in the battle against the disease,” it stressed.

Moreover, the tally of Dengue cases reported for 2023 has already surpassed the 65,000 mark.  


As of October 08th 65,178 cases have been reported in 2023, with the highest number of cases being from the Colombo district, which stood at 13,700.   The Western Province has recorded over 31,000 cases, the highest province- wise.   The month of October has also logged 692 Dengue cases.  


Meanwhile, a total of 38 fatalities have been reported since January 2023.   


In this context, people are urged to keep their surroundings clean and destroy mosquito breeding places in order to keep dengue at bay.
