The Western slopes in the central hills have been receiving high rainfall since last morning.
Wimalasurendra Hydro-power Reservoir was spilling over and several locations on the Norton Bridge –Ginigathena Main Road had been obstructed by earth slips.
Road Development Authority had taken steps to clear the obstructions to traffic. The surrounding area of the Norton Bridge bus stand had been affected by floods.
Meanwhile, the Nawalapitiya Town had gone under water causing obstructions to traffic. The Nawalapitiya Hospital road and a stretch of the Nawalapitiya-Gampola Road from the Nawalapitiya Bus Stand had been inundated.
Several business establishments and houses in Nawalapitiiya, Walapitiya and Weligampala areas had been affected by floods due to the overflowing of the Mahaweli River.
Meanhwile, Kaluganga and its tributary Kuruganga rivers had been rising fast by yesterday afternoon posing a danger of a minor flood.
The water level in Kaluganga stood at 20ft which was 3ft above the limit of minor flood threat. A senior official of the Irrigation Department said the water level had risen by 3ft in 45minutes.
He pointed out that the water level of 6ft at 8.00am had risen to 20ft by 12.30pm , marking an increase of 14ft in four hours.
