A fatal accident at Katuwana early last morning had left two passengers killed and two others seriously injured and admitted to Matara General Hospital and Karapitiya Teaching Hospital, the Police said.

The accident had occurred when a lorry veered off the road and crashed into a wayside tree at Hulankanda in Katuwana on Urubokka – Embilipitiya Road. 
The lorry was transporting a stock of household effects to Embilipitiya.

The deceased were identified as Mitrasena Malwatthage (64) and Bajjangoda Arachchige Uraj Samapath (45) of Liyanegaa, Embilipitiya.  They had died while being transferred from Walasmulla Base Hospital, one to Matara GH and the other to Karapitiiya Teaching Hospital.

Police said either the driver had fallen asleep at the wheel or had lost control of the lorry with a load of goods due to excessive speed. Residents of the area said that in an eralier incident two individuals, father and son, riding on a motorcycle had crashed into a tree and died at the same location. 

Katuwana Police are conducting investigations.
