Maussakele and Castlereagh reservoirs that feed Laxapana, New Laxapana, Polpitiya and Wimalasurendra hydropower complexes were further dwindling due to the prevailing drought. Engineers in charge of the two reservoirs said the water level in the Maussakele reservoir stood 55 ft. below the spill level and that of the Castlereagh reservoir 40 ft below by last morning.

Several old buildings in the Maskeliya old town that had gone under Maussakele reservoir had emerged, and the people could even walk to them.
