While saying that he is not aware of the exact reason for his removal as the Secretary to the Ministry of Agriculture Prof. Uditha K. Jayasinghe affirmed that he still stands by his previous comments with regards to an imminent food shortage in the country.
He told reporters yesterday that he had not been accused of any fraud, corruption or bribery during his tenure and added the reason for his abrupt removal from the position is unclear. “I had no clue that I would be removed. However, I was not formally informed in writing either about my removal from the post. In fact, I received a telephone call from the Presidential Secretariat informing my removal but no reason was explained,” he said.
“I was only sent a letter via my WhatsApp issued by the Secretary to the President P. B. Jayasundara regarding the appointment of a new secretary,” Prof. Jayasinghe underscored.
In reference to his remarks on food shortage, he said the statement he made was not controversial as he was well aware of what would lead to a food shortage. “My statement would only be controversial for those who have zero knowledge about agricultural sector and the situation in terms of the cultivation of vegetables, coconut and other food,” he argued.
However, Prof. Jayasinghe reiterated that with the prevailing circumstances, a food shortage is very much on the cards and added he had been stressing this right from the beginning. “I have been making this warning with relevant scientific evidence. It is only to brace ourselves and for authorities to take suitable measures to address the imminent food shortage,” he added.
Meanwhile, Prof. Jayasinghe stated that he had been putting all his effort and knowledge during the past months to accomplish something worthwhile for everyone. “I worked even without getting my salary of Rs.50,000. Though, I have some regret in losing my position, I am not going to lament over it,” he added.
