Indian Jailed over vandalising Buddha statue dies in Prison



  • The suspect had been kept in remand custody in the Wariyapola Prison
  • He had come to Sri Lanka about 16 years ago and had married a Sri Lankan woman

An Indian national who was remanded in connection with vandalising Buddha Statues in Kuliyapitiya, has died in the prison last morning.

 Prisons Spokesman Chandana Ekanayake said the suspect had been kept in remand custody in the Wariyapola Prison.  
He had died after being admitted to the Wariyapola Hospital, it is reported.  


The Kuliyapitiya Police arrested the suspect last month on charges of demolishing the heads of some statues of Buddha at a shrine in Rathmalewatta.  
The suspect had come to Sri Lanka about 16 years ago and had married a Sri Lankan woman.
