The Health Ministry has observed that Dengue, which is currently spreading at an alarming rate in the country, kills infants, children and the active population, Chief Epidemiologist Dr. Sudath Samaraweera said yesterday.

“In 2022 more than 62,000 dengue cases were reported which is three times the figure reported in 2021, ‘’ Dr. Samaraweera said at a media briefing in Colombo.  In comparison to the number of deaths that occurred due to the COVID-19 disease and other illnesses, the numbers may seem trivial, yet the highlight is that infants, children and the active population of the country who contribute to the economy are dying due to dengue,” he said.

He further elaborated on the precautions one can take to avoid the fatal complications and keep the situation controlled.
“According to surveys, home, workplace, school and religious sites are noted as hotspots where the dengue mosquito mostly breeds.
