The Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna is ready to take over the government for a short period of time until an election was held if they were given the chance to select a Cabinet of their choice, JVP Leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake said yesterday.

He told the media after a meeting with the representatives of the 43rd Brigade led by Parliamentarian Patali Champika Ranawaka at JVP Headquarters last morning.

Mr. Dissanayake said they believed that the President and the Prime Minister should not be elected through deals or political games and added that it should happen through a people’s mandate.

“We are ready to take over the government for a certain period of time. We are not running away from the responsibility. We are ready to take up the responsibility. But, only three of us represent Parliament. If we are given the right to elect a Cabinet of our choice, we are ready to take up the responsibility,” he said.
He said their main objective was to dissolve this Parliament which is outdated, invalid and no longer represents people’s mandate reasonably.
Meanwhile, 43rd Brigade leader Parliamentarian Patali Champika Ranawaka said the struggle would emerge again if the President failed to step down as promised.
He said the mandate of the Rajapaksas was negated and said they had no right to govern the country anymore.

Mr. Ranawaka said however, the others had no right to function outside the Constitution and democratic framework.

Patali Champika Ranawaka, Karunaratne Paranavithana, Nishantha Sri Warnasinghe, Bandula Chandrasekara and Sumeda Ratnayake attended the meeting on behalf of the 43rd Brigade while JVP leader Anura Kumara Dissanayake, JVP politburo members Sunil Handunnetti and Lal Kantha represented the JVP.
JVP representatives also met Sri Lanka Muslim Congress leader Rauff Hakeem recently.
