An accused who stood indicted with attempted murder was found guilty and sentenced to 13 years rigorous imprisonment by Hambantota High Court Judge yesterday. He was fined Rs.10,000 and sentenced to further one year rigorous imprisonment in default of the fine.
The accused Mahamarakkalage Sahashi Sahan Petum (33), father of two children was a resident of Tissa Road, Weerawila.
He had on December 26, 2018 stabbed his wife Nadeeka Lakmali (31), a Grama Niladhari in Sadunagama in Tissamaharama, at his house in Weerawila causing her serious injuries, over a family dispute.
Police told court that the accused stabbed his wife in front of the police officers, who called over at his house to resolve the dispute and that they rushed the injured woman to hospital.
Delivering the sentence, the High Court Judge held that the prosecution had established the charges against the accused beyond reasonable doubt securing a conviction against him.
State Counsel Anuradha Wijesurendra prosecuted.
