The emergency spill gates in Kalawewa reservoir were opened on Sunday night (25) to release excess water into Kala Oya river. The reservoir had reached spill level by Sunday evening due to the heavy rainfall experienced in the area at present.

Irrigation Engineers of the Kalawewa office said spill water was being released to Kala Oya at a speed of 4,000 cu.ft. per second. They said more than 6,500 cu.ft of water was flowing from Dambulu Oya river and other water resources and that the reservoir’s capacity stood at 86,653 acre ft. by last morning.   Meanwhile Kalawewa- Avukana Road had gone under water after the release of water from Kalawewa.

Irrigation Engineers warned the people living in the low-lying areas of Kala Oya to be cautious of a possible flood threat if the inclement weather persisted and the water level in Kala Oya increased.
